Pure rainwater is the gentlest case. Anything with dissolved minerals or salts — lake water, pool water, a soft drink, laundry detergent — is far more aggressive and far more urgent.
Residue. When the water evaporates it leaves behind whatever was dissolved in it. A fob that went through a wash cycle can be bone dry and still fail, because it now has a film of detergent across the board that conducts just enough to confuse things. This is why "it dried out and still doesn't work" is a common and entirely logical outcome.
The First Hour, In Order
Minute one: get the battery out. Everything else is secondary. Most fobs open with a coin, a small screwdriver, or a release catch — and many have a removable emergency key blade that, once slid out, reveals the seam or the screw. If you cannot open it in the next couple of minutes, still do not press any buttons, and get to somewhere you can.
Do not press anything to "test if it still works." This is the single most common way a saveable fob dies. You will know whether it works after it is dry. Testing it wet tells you nothing useful and risks everything.
Do not apply heat. No hairdryer, no oven, no dashboard in the Texas sun with the windows up. Heat drives moisture deeper into the board before it evaporates it, warps plastic, and can lift components. A warm, dry, moving-air spot is right. A heat source is not.
Open it up fully. Separate the halves, take out the board, remove the rubber button pad, take out the emergency blade. Water trapped under a button pad or against the battery contact will sit there for days if the fob stays assembled. This is the step most people skip and it is the step that decides the outcome.
If the water was anything other than clean: the board needs rinsing before it dries, which sounds wrong and is not. Lake water, salt water, a soft drink, or detergent all leave conductive residue that has to be displaced. High-concentration isopropyl alcohol is the standard way to do this — it displaces water, evaporates cleanly, and leaves nothing behind. If you do not have any, clean fresh water is better than leaving lake water on the board, provided the drying afterwards is thorough.
Then dry it properly. Open, spread out, somewhere warm with air moving — a fan is ideal. Minimum 24 hours, better 48. If you have silica gel packets, use those. Skip the rice. It is not an effective desiccant at this scale, it sheds starch and dust into the housing, and Apple's own guidance on wet devices explicitly tells people not to use it. It is a myth that persists because fobs often survive anyway, and then the rice gets the credit.
Only then: fit a fresh battery and test. Not the old one — the old one has been sitting in water and its contacts have been oxidising the whole time. A new coin cell is a couple of dollars and removes a variable.
What Usually Survives and What Usually Does Not
This is where people are most often surprised, and it is worth knowing before you assume the fob is finished.
The transponder frequently survives. The chip that tells your engine it is allowed to run is typically a passive component — no battery, few connections, often potted or sealed. On a turn-key vehicle that means a fob whose buttons are permanently dead can still start the car perfectly well. On a push-to-start vehicle it means the backup position, where you hold the fob against the start button or a marked spot on the column, may still work. Try that before concluding you need a new key at all.
The buttons and the transmitter are the most fragile part. The rubber pad traps moisture, the contacts under it corrode, and the radio side of the board is where the fine traces live. Lock, unlock and panic failing while starting still works is the classic water-damage signature.
The battery contacts are the most common quiet failure. Corroded contacts make intermittent connection: the fob works, then does not, then does again at a shorter range. If the fob is behaving inconsistently after a soaking, look at the contacts before condemning the board.
Prolonged submersion is different from a splash. A fob that spent an afternoon in the lake before someone found it is a much lower-probability save than one that went in and came out in ten seconds. Both are worth drying properly. Only one is worth being optimistic about.
When the Vehicle Got Wet Too
A fob that went swimming is an inconvenience. A vehicle that went through high water is a different conversation entirely, and it is the one that turns into real money.
Hood County gets flash flooding, low-water crossings go from passable to not in minutes, and modules do not have to be submerged to be ruined — a footwell that stood in a few inches of water is enough when the module lives under a seat or behind a kick panel. The symptoms show up late. A vehicle that drove out of the water fine can develop no-start faults, intermittent immobilizer behaviour, and dead keyless entry weeks afterwards, and by then nobody connects the two events.

A shell swap deserves one honest caveat. Moving a wet board into a fresh housing looks like a cheap win, and sometimes it is — but a board that has been in lake water can work for a month and then quit. If the fob is your only key, that is a risk with a tow at the end of it. On a second key it is a reasonable gamble.
